Graduate Prospectus 2010-11

Funding provided by the University

Cambridge Home/EU Studentships Scheme (CHESS)

The University provides a small number of awards for prospective PhD students who have narrowly missed out on Research Council funding ie AHRC, ESRC (Home and EU students only). This only applies to PhD students beginning their study from October 2010.

Students applying for one-year courses are not eligible to apply.

Eligibility is the same as for Research Council awards. Home students are eligible for a full studentship (University Composition and College Fees plus a maintenance stipend). EU students who have been resident in the UK for the three years prior to the start of their doctoral studies for the purposes of work or education are also eligible for a full studentship. EU students who cannot provide this relevant connection with the UK are eligible for a ‘fees-only’ award (University Composition and College Fees). Students must be nominated by their department by late April 2010 so must apply for admission in good time before this. Information is available at:

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards (DHPA)

These awards are allocated to named supervisors and are fully funded by a partnership between the UK Research Councils and industrial sponsors. They are available to candidates for the PhD in sciences and social sciences who are nationals of certain countries. For the full list of countries and details of the scheme please refer to the EPSRC website:

The University is able to offer approximately 5 DHPA studentships each year. Studentships are advertised by departments in receipt of a DHPA grant.

Cambridge International Scholarships Scheme (CISS)

Cambridge University will offer, via the Cambridge Trusts, at least 40 Cambridge International Scholarships to Overseas Students who embark on a PhD in 2010-11. Each award will underwrite the full cost of fees and maintenance for the duration of the course (up to a maximum of three years). Eligible students must be liable to pay the overseas composition fee, and be engaged in full-time study. The awards will be made on a competitive basis to those applicants considered by their departments to be the most outstanding.
