Graduate Prospectus 2010-11

Applying for funding

It is your responsibility to seek funding: research the options available and apply for those awards for which you are eligible. Do pay attention to funding deadlines, as these may be considerably earlier than deadlines for your application to study (GRADSAF). Students CAN apply for funding before securing an offer of study and indeed most students apply for admission and apply for funding concurrently.

Funding is offered by various institutions at Cambridge University: the University, individual departments, colleges, Cambridge Trusts; and each run their own funding competitions.

Funding applications contained in the application form for admission (GRADSAF)

  • non-UK students – your GRADSAF is also your application to the Cambridge Trusts if you are made an offer to study. Note: UK students are not eligible for funding from the Cambridge Trusts
  • UK/EU students – you can indicate if you wish your department to consider you for Research Council funding by ticking the box on page 1. Note that there may be further documentation that you need to provide (ie a 500 word research proposal for AHRC).

All other sources of funding must be applied for separately.

Please note:

  • If you receive an offer of admission to study, this is not an offer of funding – unless this is expressly stated
  • If you already have funding, this does not guarantee that you will receive an offer to study, which is based on academic criteria only
  • Unlike in some countries, funding at Cambridge does not usually require students to work as Research Assistants or Teaching Assistants.
  • The University publishes a list of funding available each year – Reporter Special issue no 6. It is available here: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/reporter/
