Graduate Prospectus 2010-11
Subjects and courses
Subjects are arranged alphabetically within three headings:
- Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
- Physical Sciences, Technology and Management
- Biological, Medical and Veterinary Sciences
Some subjects are available in more than one department or faculty within the University, so you will need to decide which of these best suits your interests and needs.
Within each department and institution, courses are divided into two groups: courses with taught elements, and research programmes. The first group lists those courses which contain both taught and research elements. The second group describes ‘pure research’ courses (that is, they are examined by thesis and oral only). This group includes Integrated Masters and Doctoral programmes (IDP programmes) where the first year includes both taught elements and laboratory rotations; or where a masters leads directly to a PhD. See Studying at Cambridge for more information.
Please note that the division of courses into ‘taught’ and ‘research’ does not follow the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) definition. For the purposes of this Prospectus, any MPhil or MSt with a taught component has been classified as a ‘taught course’, even if the course would normally be classified as ‘research’ under HESA.
