Cambridge and India
Awards administered by Cambridge Trusts
The Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust enable candidates of outstanding academic merit, who would not otherwise be able to take up places at Cambridge, to pursue courses of study or research. The Trusts offer awards to selected students at PhD, Masters and undergraduate level in all subjects, and at all 31 Colleges of the University of Cambridge. Awards, which include both full-cost and part-cost scholarships, are made only at the beginning of a course of study, and continue for the duration of the course.
Some scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit alone. Most scholarship schemes also take account of financial need.
There are many scholarships available for Indian students at all levels of study, both undergraduate and postgraduate.
- Gates Cambridge scholarships are offered each year to approximately 90 postgraduate students from all countries outside the UK, and in any academic field.
- The Cambridge Commonwealth Trust manages a number of scholarship programmes, including the prestigious Cambridge International Scholarships, for international PhD students in any subject.
The Trust also manages several scholarships specifically for Indian applicants:
- Manmohan Singh Undergraduate Scholarship – a full-cost scholarship towards a first degree in any subject except Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.
- SGPC Cambridge Scholarship – a programme of full-cost awards for Sikh applicants to Masters or PhD courses in subjects central to the development of higher education in India.
- PHFI Cambridge Scholarship – a scholarship for PhD students in Public Health, who have been selected under the PHFI's Future Faculty programme.
- Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Trust Cambridge Scholarship – a full-cost award towards PhD study in any subject.

- Pemanda Monappa Scholarship – a part-cost award (£12,000) for students from Andhra Pradesh who undertake a Masters degree in Science, Technology, Economics, Law or English Literature.
- Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship – for PhD students in the fields of Arts, Humanities and Heritage Conservation; the value of each award varies according to each student's financial need and other funding.
To be considered for an award by the Trusts you must be admitted by the University as a student. In the case of most scholarships, your application to the University will automatically ensure that you are considered for an award. However, for certain scholarships which the Trusts offer with partner organizations, you will also need to make a separate application. Information about scholarships and application procedures, and eligibility for scholarships can be found on the Trusts' website.
Other scholarships available for study at Cambridge include the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarship (for PhD students at St John's College, Cambridge who are carrying out research in Science, Technology, Economics or Social Sciences) and many smaller awards offered by individual Cambridge colleges and departments.
